Thermocouples , in simple terms can be described as combination of hot metals that produce electricity. It is a combination of 2 different alloys/ metals which are combined together for temperature measurement. The elements used in manufacturing of thermo sensors are made from specific electro materials to withstand the critical voltage fluctuation issues. These are the most widely used sensors for measurement as one can get the results without any hectic procedures. Beaded wire thermocouples are considered to be good for measurement of gas temperatures.
TYPES AND UTILISATION:
Thermocouple sensor are widely used in various applications right from industrial productivity to the manufacturing of electronic appliances as well as in space shuttle programmes. There are certain types of thermocouple sensors as E-type, J-type, K-type, N-type. There are temperature sensors, position sensors, force sensors, vibration sensors, humidity sensors and depending upon the work to be done these sensors are utilized.
Type J thermocouple sensors are suitable for oxidizing atmosphere with reduced life ,hence heavy gauge wires are recommended for maximum temperature applications. Exposure to sulphur may prove harmful for the correct utilization of type J.
Type K is widely used in chemical , gas and water industries. This type of sensor shows a perfect combine of chrome and alloy that can avoid oxidation issues. The utlisation of these types can be used for applications upto 1260 C. Type K can be recommended for neutral atmospheres. Exposure to sulphur should be avoided in case of utilization of type K thermocouple sensors else it may result in failure.
The usage life of a Thermocouple sensor can extend upto 10-12 years
MERITS:
Some of the advantages of thermocouple sensors are they are self powered, results shown are quite accurate, durability range is very high, most thermos are inexpensive and the shape of these sensors are mostly L shaped.
DEMERITS:
The accuracy of the results displayed by the thermocouple is not fully correct. The thermo sensors application becomes vulnerable as time passes by. The segregation of thermo sensors if not done accurately may lead to destructive conditions.
EFFICIENCY AND HOW THEY WORK:
The thermocouple sensors work on seebeck effect which occurs when there is a flow of electricity from one metal to the other metal. To make it simple, the process where changes in temperature between utilization of 2 different electrical conductors which generates a difference in voltage is handled can be called as seebeck effect.
In case of assessment of efficiency about the usage of thermocouple sensors ,if we consider the usage of conventional thermocouple it shows a low conversion efficiency and is also a bit expensive. The maintenance for thermocouple sensors is also an important thing to be accounted for. To increase the life of these sensors, excessive bending of the sensors should be avoided, they should be kept at such a place where excess heat is not generated, use of protection tubes becomes compulsory.
